I had two couches I was allowed to play video games on, and thus my circle expanded. The magic circle followed wherever I traveled, allowing me to step “out of ‘real’ life into a temporary sphere of activity with a disposition all of its own”, as Huizinga stated in his Homo Ludens (1949 : 8).Įventually, as consoles were introduced to my family, I was allowed to play my handheld consoles at home. Pokemon transformed long and boring trips into escapes for young Paul that stimulated his creativity. I could only play for twenty minutes at a time before passing it to my siblings, and I could only play on trips longer than an hour long. I was never allowed to play video games at home, at friends’ houses, or anywhere except airplanes and cars. In addition, while the concept of the Magic Circle has come into question with massively mobile gaming, (Moore, 2011: 365) I find that it works fairly well for my Pokemon gameplay experience. They don’t have the same immortal properties as my video game consoles do – whereas I will replace my phone and laptop, I add new games and consoles to a collection. I will never get rid of my old gaming devices or my Pokemon cartridges (bury them with me, please), but I have no intention of saving my old laptops or iPhones for the Pokemon on them. As someone who has toyed with different ideas for Pokemon games since he was 10, it serves as inspiration to me or a cure for boredom, but not much more. In fact, it almost seemed to attack my concept of Pokemon. When I play Pokemon on a laptop, I typically fail to have any sort of emotional attachment. To me, Pokemon has so much to do with the enchanted object of the cartridge. From putting all the Pokemon that exist into one region (such as Pokemon Volt White 2 or Pokemon Sacred Gold) to creating totally randomized experiences to creating an entirely new world and story (such as Pokemon Snakewood or Pokemon Flora Sky), people have been able to push the boundaries of Pokemon and share them with players looking to expand their Pokemon horizons. Most are edits of Generation 3 games (since those seem to be the easiest to edit), though some have dipped into all generations. ROM hacks of Pokemon are not hard to find. This is a hack for those of you who a) want a very difficult gaming experience while playing a relatively simple JRPG, b) enjoy pain, c) enjoy Pokemon SO MUCH that you will play any well-made ROM hack, regardless of how difficult it is and/or d) specifically enjoyed Pokemon Crystal version so much that you want to see it reimagined with more Pokemon and obstacles. Below is a link to the 5th of 16 gym battles (and if you are familiar with Pokemon games, you will see how difficult this is in comparison)

This game is HARD, and if you are anything like me, you will lose interest before completing it. While I have never played a Pokemon game’s main storyline that has taken me longer than 40 hours to complete, I have not yet reached the halfway point of this game, and I am at 150 hours of play.

While playing on the VisualBoy Advance, I have the ability to speed up the emulation by 20x. The challenge is enjoyable to a point, but hours are wasted in grinding your Pokemon up to high enough levels to progress in the game… and I don’t mean a few hours, I mean dozens.

This game plays almost exactly the same as the original Pokemon Crystal version, but the difficulty has been increased tremendously. A hack exists for Pokemon Crystal ROMs known as Pokemon Crystal Kaizo version.

If you’ve ever been ridiculed for the relative simplicity and easiness of a Pokemon game, you’re in luck.
